The fifth matchweek of UEFA Champions League 2012/13 Group Stage took place on the evenings of Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st November 2012, as some big names confirmed their place in the last 16, while others have guaranteed it is the end of the line for this season in club football’s biggest tournament.

Group A UEFA Champions League Results, Matchweek 5

  • FC Dynamo Kyiv 0-2 Paris Saint-Germain FC
  • FC Porto 3-0 GNK Dinamo Zagreb

In Group A, FC Porto and Paris Saint Germain have confirmed their passage to the knockout phase, at the expense of Dynamo Kiev and Dinamo Zagreb who sit third and fourth respectively. With one match to play, Kiev are assured a placed in the UEFA Europa League as they are four points clear of Zagreb who sit on zero points.

Porto and PSG will battle to decide which side tops the group, with Porto needing only a point, though PSG will have home advantage: an intriguing prospect.

Group B UEFA Champions League Results, Matchweek 5

  • Arsenal FC 2-0 Montpellier Hérault SC
  • FC Schalke 04 1-0 Olympiacos FC

Arsenal confirmed their passage to the next stage of the tournament with a good victory over Montpellier, who have only claimed one point in the Group Stage thus far. They must outperform Shalke for the group supremacy in the final fixture, after the German side took a one point lead by defeating Greek side Olympiacos in a hard-faught home win.

Arsenal will travel to Olympiacos while Shalke are away at Montpellier in the final fixture – with just a point between the German and the English sides heading into the match.

  • RSC Anderlecht 1-3 AC Milan

Malaga and Milan are sure of a place in the knockout stage of the Champions League after the former picked up a good point away at Zenit with a 2-2 draw, while Milan produced a nice performance to win 3-1 away at Anderlecht.

In the final fixture, Milan will host Zenit looking for a win, while Malaga welcome Anderlecht knowing that a point will be enough.

Group D UEFA Champions League Results, Matchweek 5

  • AFC Ajax 1-4 Borussia Dortmund
  • Manchester City FC 1-1 Real Madrid CF

Manchester City were confirmed out of the Champions League when they failed to comeback from a goal down away at Real Madrid for anything more than a point. Borussia Dortmund’s impressive 4-1 victory away at Ajax puts them firmly in the driving seat, three points ahead of Real, meaning they can afford to seek a draw in the final round. Ajax and Man City will need to outperform the other for the Europa parachute.

In the final fixture, Dortmund will host Man City, while Real Madrid host Ajax, with all sides seeking at least one point.

Group E UEFA Champions League Results, Matchweek 5

  • FC Nordsjælland 2-5 FC Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Juventus 3-0 Chelsea FC

Champions Chelsea look all-but out of this year’s Champions League after producing a miserable performance away at an inspired Juventus. Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo found out just how important UEFA Champions League football is to the Chelsea F.C. board when he was sacked following this defeat.

Meanwhile, in Denmark, Shakhtar Donetsk were busily taking the group lead, despite falling behind twice, in an entertaining, open, 5-2 away win.

Chelsea can progress if Juventus are beaten in their final match away at Shakhtar while they pick up all three points at home to Nordsjælland, so it is quite possible for the London side to go through, particularly given Shakhtar and Juve are to be playing off for the group win; having been beaten by both Shakhtar and Juventus, Chelsea can not afford to finish level on points with either side.

Group F UEFA Champions League Results, Matchweek 5

  • FC BATE Borisov 0-2 LOSC Lille
  • Valencia CF 1-1 FC Bayern München

Valencia and last year’s beaten finalists Bayern Munich both confirmed their place in the knockout round in sharing a point through a 1-1 draw in Spain. BATE Borisov, in losing at home to Lille 2-0 miss out, but are reasonably sure of a Europa League place.

The best performer of Bayern (who host BATE) and Valencia (who travel to Lille) next week will top this group.

Group G UEFA Champions League Results, Matchweek 5

  • FC Spartak Moskva 0-3 FC Barcelona
  • SL Benfica 2-1 Celtic FC

Barcelona bounced back from their shock loss at Celtic with a good 3-0 victory away at Spartak Moscow, while the Scots fell to a 2-1 defeat away at Benfica which puts a huge weight on both sides in the final round, putting them level on 7 points apiece.

With Celtic at home to Spartak in the final group stage match, while Benfica host the ever impressive Barcelona, it looks like Celtic are favourites to progress. But this group has not gone exactly to plan to date, indicating an exciting final group stage match is on the cards.

Group H UEFA Champions League Results, Matchweek 5

  • Galatasaray AŞ 1-0 Manchester United FC
  • CFR 1907 Cluj 3-1 SC Braga

Manchester United, already confirmed to not only progress, but to win Group H, succumbed to their first defeat of this season’s UEFA Champions League in falling to a 1-0 loss away at Galatasaray. Cluj took the opportunity to stay hot on the Turkish side’s heels, though, by grabbing a much needed 3-1 home victory over Braga.

Whoever does the better of Galatasaray (who are away at Braga) and Cluj (who travel to Man Utd’s Old Trafford) will claim the all-important second place.
