Football: UEFA Champions League Results, Wednesday 8th December 2010

The final group games of UEFA Champions League 2010/2011 took place yesterday, Wednesday 8th December 2010, as the teams in Groups E, F, G and H competed to decide who would reach the knockout phase.

Group E – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011

  • Bayern Munich 3-0 Basle
  • CFR 1907 Cluj-Napoca 1-1 Roma

Bayern Munich affirmed their group dominance with a 3-0 win in Basle. They were already assured the group victory, but last year’s losing finalist finished on 15 points, having lost just once. Roma claimed second place courtesy of a 1-1 draw away at CFR Cluj – though Basle’s defeat would have seen them through in any case. Basle end in third, and take the drop to the Europa League, while Cluj end on four points at the foot of the table.

Group F – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011

  • Marseille 1-0 Chelsea
  • MSK Zilina 1-2 Spartak Moscow

Marseille needed a win to be sure of qualification, and they achieved this with a good 1-0 win over Chelsea at home, removing their illustrious visitor’s 100% win record in the process. Chelsea had already won the group, so it was clear which side had more to play for from the off. Both teams qualify, while Spartak Moscow, who got the win they required in MSK Zilina, with a 2-1 away victory, parachute into Europa league, with their opponent finishing bottom on zero points.

Group G – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011

  • AC Milan 0-2 Ajax
  • Real Madrid 4-0 Auxerre

Real Madrid were impressive, winning 4-0 at home to Auxerre, to remain undefeated in Champions League 2010/2011, while Ajax picked up a solid 2-0 away win at Milan. Real and Milan qualify first and second, however, and Ajax drop to Europa League, with last night’s win proving to be too little, too late. Auxerre are bottom of the group on three points.

Group H – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011

  • Arsenal 3-1 Partizan Belgrade
  • Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 Braga

Arsenal overcame an early nervy moment – when bottom club Partizan Belgrade equalised early in the second half – but late goals from Walcott and the impressive Nasri ensured their progression in second place. As it was, Shakhtar Donetsk had secured themselves the group win with a 2-0 home victory over Braga – that would have seen Arsenal qualify with a point. Partizan remain win-less, and finish bottom of the group on zero points. Shakhtar Donetsk and Arsenal qualify for the knockout rounds, while Braga parachute to Europa League.
