Football: UEFA Champions League Preview, Tuesday 7 December 2010

UEFA Champions League football returns on the evening of Tuesday, 7th December 2010, when the teams from Groups A, B, C and D will compete in the final round of group games before the knock-out phase.

Group A

  • FC Twente v Tottenham – Group A – Kick-Off (GMT) 19:45
  • Werder Bremen v Inter Milan – Group A – Kick-Off (GMT) 19:45

Group A has already been decided, in terms of qualification: Tottenham and Inter Milan are already certain to progress. With both sides currently on 10 points, however, there is still everything to be gained from a result this evening. Tottenham need to at least match Inter’s result to ensure the group win, as they have a superior goal difference, by three goals.

Group B

  • Benfica v Schalke 04 – Group B – Kick-Off (GMT) 19:45
  • Lyon v Hapoel Tel-Aviv – Group B – Kick-Off (GMT) 19:45

Shalke are guaranteed a place in the next phase, though they may find it tough against a Benfica side fighting for its life at home. Benfica are currently three points behind Lyon, and -4 on goal difference with the French side, so they must win by two or three goals and hope that Hapoel Tel-Aviv can do the same in Lyon, otherwise they are out. Mathematically, at least, this group is still alive. Lyon can avoid their exit by securing just a point, and they might even claim a group win (they trail Shalke by just one point) if they get a better result than the German side.

Group C

  • Bursaspor v Rangers – Group C – Kick-Off (GMT) 19:45
  • Man Utd v Valencia – Group C – Kick-Off (GMT) 19:45

Group C is a straight shootout between Man Utd and Valencia for group supremacy. If Valencia can defeat United, whom they trail by three points, they will win the group courtesy of thei superior goal difference. Avoid defeat, and Man Utd are group winners. United have yet to concede a goal in five group games, or score more than two in 90 minutes.

Group D

  • Barcelona v Rubin Kazan – Group D – Kick-Off (GMT) 19:45
  • FC Copenhagen v Panathinaikos – Group D – Kick-Off (GMT) 19:45

Rubin Kazan travel to Barcelona in third place in Group D, one point behind FC Copenhagen. A draw could see Kazan through if the Danish side lose at home to Panathinaikos. If Copenhagen win, they will qualify in second place, regardless of Barca’s result: the Spaniards are already assured the group win. In short, Kazan need a result in Barcelona, and must hope that Copenhagen fail to get one at home to the worst side in this group. The writing could be on the wall.
