The final eight group games for UEFA Champions League 2010/2011 are scheduled to take place on the evening of Wednesday, 8th December 2010, as the teams from groups E, F, G and H are in action.
Group E – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011
- Bayern Munich v Basle – Group E – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
- CFR 2007 Cluj-Napoca v Roma – Group E – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
Bayern Munich have already won Group D, so Basle will be hoping they field a weakened side, particularly as they require all three points to stand any chance of qualifying for the next phase. Roma sit three points ahead of Basle, so a point or better in CFR 2007 Cluj-Napoca will secure their progression, though a big win for the Romanians, and a heavy defeat for Basle, could see the third place change too. This group has several permutations, though the most likely is we finish the day as it began, with Bayern 1st, Roma 2nd, Basle 3rd and CFR Cluj at the foot of the group.
Group F – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011
- Marseille v Chelsea – Group F – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
- MSK Zilina v Spartak Moscow – Group F – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
Group F is a little less interesting. Only a heavy Chelsea win over Marseille and a goal glut from Spartak Moscow away at Zilina will see Spartak overtake Marseille for the vital second place. As things stand, Spartak are three points behind the French side, and have 12 goals to make up, if they are to reach the next phase. Chelsea have already secured the group win, and MSK Zilina have no chance of the third Europa League place.
Group G – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011
- AC Milan v Ajax – Group G – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
- Real Madrid v Auxerre – Group G – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
The group win for Real Madrid is already confirmed, as is AC Milan’s second place, so tonight comes down to Europa League places, with managerless Ajax sitting in the parachute third position just apoint ahead of Auxerre. Both teams must travel to European forteresses, so things could well stay as they are, though a win for either Ajax or Auxerre would, in all probability, be enough to get them a Europa place. There is still some interest in this group, thanks to the third place battle.
Group H – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011
- Arsenal v Partizan Belgrade – Group H – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
- Shakhtar Donetsk v Braga – Group H – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
Group H is more interesting still, as Shakhtar Donetsk sit at the top on 12 points, despite Arsenal having raced away early in the season. Arsenal are second, courtesy of a superior goal difference, for they sit level on points with Braga. If Arsenal win, they are guaranteed to be through, no matter what the result in Shakhtar Donetsk v Braga.
Braga will only qualify if they win by more than 5 goals – if Arsenal also win – or if they get a point or better and Arsenal lose. Shakhtar need only to ensure they stay within four goals of Braga in order to progress, though any point or better means they win the group.
Partizan Belgrade will suffer the ignominy of finishing on zero points if they lose away at Arsenal, so their is pride at stake for them, too. With Braga hunting goals, and Arsenal needing to win to make certain their qualification, and to further their chances of winning the group, tonight’s games could see much excitement. If Arsenal do win their group, they will be the fourth English Premier League club from the four in the competition to do so in UEFA Champions League 2010/2011.
