Football: UEFA Champions League 2011 Quarter Final 2nd Leg Results, Tuesday 12 April

Manchester United and Barcelona booked their places in the Semi Final of UEFA Champions League 2011 after both sides produced wins in their respective Quarter Final second leg matches on the evening of Tuesday 12th April 2011.

Man Utd 2-1 Chelsea (Aggregate 3-1)

Manchester United started this second leg match at Old Trafford with a 1-0 advantage from the opening leg thanks to a Wayne Rooney goal, and it was the same player who looked to have got the home side off to a great start mid way through the first half when he put in a delightful cross for Hernandez to score, only to see the assistant referee flag for a marginal offside.

However, the Mexican striker would soon have another opportunity from close range after good interplay on the right-hand side saw veteran central midfielder Ryan Giggs cut in and play a low cross which Hernandez hammers home shortly before half time – with the goal time being 43 minutes.

United led 1-0 at the break.

Chelsea replaced Fernando Torres, who remains out-of-sorts, with Didier Drogba, who began the match on the bench, and the Ivorian made an immediate nuisance of himself, using his physique to create some good chances and dangerous attempts at goal.

Despite Remires being sent off for the visitors for a second bookable offence, following a clumsy tackle from behind on United’s Nani, Drogba got Chelsea to within one goal of qualification with a good chest down and shot which went under Edwin van der Sar on 77 minutes.

However, as if to show that they were, against ten men, playing within themselves, United immediately went down the other end and, after yet another delightful ball from Ryan Giggs, Park Ji Sung chested down and left-footed a great finish past Petr Cech to restore the two goal advantage before even one minute had elapsed since Drogba’s similar strike at the other end.

So the match would finish: 2-1 to United on the night; 3-1 on aggregate. Man Utd progress to a Semi-Final against either Shalke (who are firm favourites holding a 5-2 advantage) or Inter Milan.

Shakhtar Donetsk 0-1 Barcelona (Aggregate 1-6)

Barcelona came into this match knowing that anything short of a complete disaster would be enough to see them through into the next phase, but will have been thankful that Valdes in their goal was playing up to his very best against a spirited Shakhtar Donetsk attack in the opening half.

Shakhtar were perhaps the better side in the first 45 minutes, but it was Barcelona who led 1-0 at the break after Lional Messi took two excellent touches into the box, then hit a quick-fire shot into the net from around 9 metres to give the visitors the lead on 43 minutes.

The match finished with no further score, meaning Barca won 1-0 on the night and 6-1 on aggregate. Barcelona will most likely have an “El Classico” Semi-Final meeting with bitter rivals Real Madrid, who face Spurs tomorrow evening carrying a 4-0 advantage from the home leg.
