Former England, Lazio, Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur, Glasgow Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton footballer, Paul Gascoigne, could face jail for drink driving after he plead guilty to driving while more than four times over the prescribed limit today.
The former player, known popularly as “Gazza”, could face jail for the high amount of alcohol that was in his system when police arrested him in the Jesmond area of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Gascoigne’s sample showed 142 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit in the United Kingdom is just 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath.
Gascoigne was banned from driving immediately by the District Judge, Stephen Earl.
His sentencing – which could well include a custodial element – has been delayed until 11 November 2010 for the preparation of probation reports.
Gascoigne’s reports are likely to be somewhat marred by the fact the former England international is due to face another trial for the same offence – drink driving – in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, on 3rd November 2010, in the meantime.
