Football: UEFA Champions League 2011 Round of 16 Leg 2 Results, Tuesday 15 March

Two more teams made it into the hat for the UEFA Champions League 2011 Quarter Finals on the evening of Tuesday 15th March 2011, when the second leg of two Round of 16 matches were played.

Bayern Munich 2-3 Inter Milan (agg 3-3) (Inter win on away goals)

Bayern Munich were stunned in the final minutes by visiting Inter Milan, who won 3-2 on the night to overturn a 1-0 home loss from the first leg – the first team to achieve the feat since Ajax in the mid 1990s.

Eto’o got Inter back into the tie, by scoring after just three minutes, but a goal from Gomez after 21 minutes restored Bayern’s slender lead. When Mueller took the home side 2-1 up on the night (3-1 on aggregate) ten minutes later, it looked as though Bayern would be participating in yet another Champions League Quarter Final at the expense of last years winners.

However, despite the score remaining unchanged at half time, a relaxed looking Inter, who refused to be flustered, got back to within a goal of this tie with a 63rd minute goal from Sneijder. Inter still looked to be out, with the score at 2-2 on the night and 3-2 to Bayern on aggregate, as Bayern threatened to score a number of times in the final ten minutes. However, a strong run from Eto’o saw him pick out the onrushing Pandev on the edge of the Bayern penalty area: the player coolly slotted home into the top left corner with his left foot to level the tie – and put Inter through on away goals – on 88 minutes.

Man Utd 2-1 Marseille (agg 2-1)

A brace from Hernandez (5, 75) was enough to put Manchester United through to the next phase, despite an 83rd minute own goal from stand-in centre half Wes Brown giving the final ten minutes a slightly nervy feel.

United were the more clinical of the two sides, though Marseille had one or two good chances of their own to get into this tie earlier in the match, which they failed to take.
