Manchester United will send off their goalkeeper of the last six seasons, Edwin Van der Sar, with a testimonial match against Ajax Amsterdam in the Amsterdam Arena, on Wednesday 3rd August 2011.
With a squad which features top Man Utd stars past and present, the match is sure to be of interest to more than just the two clubs, with confirmed appearances due from current Man Utd stars Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick added to the recently retired Gary Neville and Edwin Van der Sar.
Former United player Louis Saha will join European giants Dennis Bergkamp and Alessandro Del Piero (unconfirmed) in a star-studded line-up at the Amsterdam Arena.
The match will be the highlight of three taking place at the ground on Wednesday evening (times in Central European Time):
- 17.45 (CET): Ajax U13 v Man Utd U13
- 18.10 (CET): Ajax ’95 v Holland ’98
- 19.15 (CET): Ajax v Edwin’s Dream Team
The opening match, Ajax U13 v Man Utd U13 will feature Edwin Van der Sar’s son, Joe, while the second match, between the Ajax European Cup Winners Cup winning side of 1995 and the Holland World Cup side of 1998 will see players like Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars, Jaap Stam and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in action at the Dutch capital once more.
The Dream Team squad will be jointly managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, of Manchester United, and Rene Meulensteen, Manchester United’s current first team coach.
