The ankle injury suffered by James McCarthy in Wigan’s home Barclays Premier League match against Bolton Wanderers – which finished 1-1 on Saturday afternoon – will cause the 19 year old Scottish midfielder to miss up to 10 weeks of football, according to his club.
The player was injured in a clash with Bolton’s Fabrice Muamba after half an hour of the match. It is believed that he has suffered ligament damage following the robust challenge that led to his being carried from the field.
According to Wigan manager, Roberto Martinez, there is no fracture to the ankle, however, and the injury is “a little bit better than we thought at first.”
Wigan will hope that the injury to the young star – who has been instrumental to their season thus far – will not see them lose momentum in their efforts to keep above the relegation zone.
Wigan currently sit in fifteenth position in the Barclays Premier League, just one point ahead of the bottom three drop zone.
