Chelsea blew open the Barclays Premier League title race, and kept themselves in the hunt for a title retention by coming from behind to defeat league leader, Manchester United, 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on the evening of Tuesday 1st March 2011.
Man Utd started brightly, in a first half in which Cheslea never really got going, so it was a fair reflection of the opening 45 minutes when the sides came in with United leading 1-0 from a 29th minute Wayne Rooney goal.
However, Chelsea emerged with more purpose in the second half, and were soon level when newly signed defender, Luiz went some way towards repaying the investment Chelsea had made in him by rifling home a good volley on 54 minutes.
With ten minutes remaining, Chelsea were awarded a penalty, much to the chagrin of all in red in the stadium, which Frank Lampard duly struck home, to secure the lead and, as it would transpire, score the winning goal.
Vidic, the United central defender, was sent off in stoppage time for a second bookable offence making the night all the more miserable for the visitors: he will be ruled out of this weekend’s all-important clash with rivals Liverpool as a result.
United were aggrieved at the manner of Chelsea’s victory, coming from a penalty, but, having enjoyed superior possession and shots on target, in particular during a dominant second half display, they certainly deserved at least a point from their travails, and, on reflection, over the 90 minutes, if one side deserved to win, it was Chelsea.
In any case, the result is what matters, and what it does to the league is make it more exciting for everyone concerned.
Chelsea are back up to fourth, in a Champions League position again, as they leapfrog Spurs. United are still four points ahead of Arsenal, but the Gunners have a game in hand, and they are yet to play each other a second time this term: Arsenal v Man Utd at the Emirates Stadium on 1st May has a big red circle around it in many a football fan’s diary now, if it did not already.
