Football: Carling Cup 2011/12 3rd Round Results, Tuesday 20 September 2011

Ten matches took place in the Third Round of the 2011/12 FA Carling Cup on the evening of Tuesday 20th September 2011, as the sides from the English Premier League entered the competition for the first time this season.

Aldershot 2-1 Rochdale

Aldershot of League Two overcame Rochdale of the division above after coming back from a 45th minute Grimes strike to take the match 2-1 and progress further than they have ever reached in the League Cup, courtesy of a goal apiece from Rankine and Hylton.

Aldershot are the lowest ranked club who remain in the competition.

Arsenal 3-1 Shrewsbury

Arsenal fans must have been worried that their dismal early season form was turning into a full-blown disaster when Shrewsbury took an unlikely away lead against them at the Emirates Stadium through a 16th minute goal from Collins. However, Arsenal replied with goals from Kieran Gibbs (33), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (58) and Yossi Benayoun (78) in a match they otherwise dominated against opposition from League Two.

Aston Villa 0-2 Bolton

An all-Premier clash at Villa Park saw Bolton Wanderers progress to Round Four following a 2-0 win. Bolton won thanks to second half goals from Eagles and Kakuta.

Blackburn 3-2 Leyton Orient

Blackburn Rovers enjoyed a 3-2 home win over a spirited Leyton Orient at Ewood Park.

The Premier League side took the lead after 44 minutes through a Jason Roberts penalty, but Orient, who are currently rooted to the bottom of League One, replied with a 64th minute goal from Mooney. Blackburn then added a two goal margin with goals from Rochina and Vukcevic coming in quick succession, but were assured a nervy final ten minutes thanks to an 86th minute goal from Leyton Orient’s Cox.

Rovers clung onto their lead, though, and progressed to the next phase.

Burnley 2-1 MK Dons

Championship side Burnley saw off the Milton Keynes Dons, by picking up a 2-1 home victory.

The Dons, who are flying high in League One at present, shocked their more illustrious hosts by scoring on 6 minutes through Powell before Burnley got their match back on track in the second half, and equalised through Trippier on 59 minutes. The Lancastrians took out the win with an 89th minute goal coming from Amougou when the match looked poised for extra time.

Crystal Palace 2-1 Middlesbrough

A Championship affair between Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough ended with the London based side coming through following a 2-1 home victory which overturned current league placings. Boro, who are currently second in the league, fell behind to goals from Zaha and Andrew before producing a reply from Zemmama with over half an hour remaining. Palace held on for a deserved victory from this match during which they had far more of the share of goalscoring opportunities.

Leeds 0-3 Manchester United

There was to be no League Cup upset over their arch rivals for Leeds United, as they fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to the in-form Manchester United.

United, playing a second string, called upon the goalscoring experience of Michael Owen who bagged a brace of goals in the first half, before the old head of Ryan Giggs added a third decisive goal a minute into first half stoppage time. Following no further goals in the second period, Manchester United progressed to the fourth round.

Nottingham Forest 3-4 Newcastle (AET)

The entertainment of the evening took place at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, where a seven goal thriller was settled in extra time by Newcastle United, who won 4-3 (AET).

Lovenkrands had got the visiting Magpies of to a lead in the 39th minute, as the Premier League outfit showed their class over Championship opposition, but Findley responded just after the break with a 46th minute strike.

Lovenkrands restored Newcastle’s lead on 60 minutes when he scored a penalty, but this goal was again equalised by Forest, just 6 minutes later, when Derbyshire got on the score-sheet for the hosts. Normal time ended with scores locked at 2-2, so a period of Extra Time was played – with most entertaining results.

First, Newcastle took the lead again through Simpson on 93 minutes, only to see that lead once more cancelled out by Forest, who scored the goal that looked to be taking this match to penalties through Tudgay on 114 minutes. However, after 2 minutes of Extra Time stoppage time, the curly headed Newcastle defender Coloccini ensured victory for the visitors from the Premier League by scoring a last-gasp goal to which Forest had no time to respond, sealing the win from this most even and entertaining of football matches.

Stoke 0-0 Tottenham (Stoke City win 7-6 on penalties)

Stoke and Tottenham could have been forgiven for displaying signs of fatigue as both of these UEFA Europa engaged Premier League sides played out their third match in a handful of days. Both sides had been on opposite ends of 4-0 league results on the weekend, so fans might have been forgiven for expecting goals. As it was, the sides played 120 minutes without the ball hitting the net at either end, before 12 penalties in a row did.

Eventually, Thomas Sorenson saved from Tottenham’s Massimo Luongo to bring an end to a Third Round League Cup match that neither side had seemed particularly keen on winning during normal time.

Wolverhampton 5-0 Millwall

Wolves got over their recent league hiccups by recording the most resounding victory of the evening, by defeating Championship bottom half outfit Millwall by an impressive 5-0 score-line.

Unanswered goals from Edwards (3), Hammill (7), Elokobi (38), Spray (77), and Guedioura (88) were enough to seal the victory for the Premier League Wolves at Molineux.
