Football: Barclays Premier League Results, Sunday 20 March 2011

A couple of important Barclays Premier League fixtures took place in the upper half of the table on Sunday 20th March 2011.

Chelsea 2-0 Man City

Chelsea moved up to third place, overtaking their Sunday opponents, Manchester City, in the process, courtesy of a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

The match looked to be heading for a stalemate before January signing, defender David Luiz scored from a Didier Drogba free-kick on 78 minutes. Ramires put the result beyond doubt a couple of minutes into injury time by adding a second.

City are now fourth, four points ahead of Tottenham, who have a game in hand, signalling another battle for the final Champions League position.

Sunderland 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool continued their improved form under Kenny Dalglish by picking up a good 2-0 away win at Sunderland, who have now lost four out of the last five league fixtures, and are slipping down the table after a promising start.

Dirk Kuyt got Liverpool off the mark from the penalty spot on 34 minutes in controversial style, after a free-kick had originally been given, only for the assistant referee to point the referee towards the spot.

Sunderland lost three players to injury in the match, as well as seeing Mensah sent off for two yellow cards on a forgettable afternoon: Suarez scored for Liverpool on 77 minutes to ensure that the Wearsiders got nothing from this disappointing day.

Liverpool were well worth their win, for they enjoyed superior possession, territory and shots on target, however, and will be only too happy to move up to within four points of Spurs in the first guaranteed Europa League position, and extend the gap between themselves, in 6th, and Bolton, who are 7th, to five points.
