Football: FA Cup 2011 Third Round Results, Sunday 9 January 2011

Four FA Cup Third Round fixtures took place on Sunday, 9th January 2011, as five of the round’s Barclays Premier League sides fought for a place in the FA Cup 2011 Fourth Round Draw.

Chelsea 7-0 Ipswich

Chelsea needed a tonic from their abject league form, and Ipswich, who parted ways with manager Roy Keane last week, appeared to feel the full force as the men in blue expelled their recent frustrations, by piling on seven goals en route to a 7-0 rout.

It took more than half an hour for the Champions of English soccer to get a goal, but, as is the custom of London buses, after waiting for a long time, two came along in quick succession. Kalou opened the scoring on 33 minutes, and Sturridge added another within a minute.

An Edwards own goal all but sealed the victory, as Chelsea came in 3-0 up at half time.

Further goals from Anelka (49 mins), Sturridge‘s second (52 mins) and a quick-fire brace from Frank Lampard (78, 79 mins) hammered home Chelsea’s advantage in the second half.

Chelsea will face Everton at Goodison Park in Round Four.

Leicester 2-2 Man City

Leicester City came in at half time 2-1 down to Manchester City, despite taking an early lead through new boy, Bamba, who scored in the first minute.

Milner equalised for the visitors on 23 minutes before Carlos Tevez put City in front on 45 minutes, in an opening half which the home side had otherwise edged.

Leicester City equalised with a goal from King on 64 minutes, but, despite their superior possession and shot count, they failed to grab the winner.

This match will be replayed at the City of Manchester Stadium at 19:45 (GMT) on Wednesday, 19 January 2011.

The winner will travel to Notts County in the next round.

Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Manchester United defeated Premier League rivals, Liverpool, 1-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a 2nd minute Ryan Giggs penalty following what appeared to be a Berbatov dive in the opening minute.

Referee Howard Webb judged that Berbatov had been tripped by Danial Agger with just 30 seconds on the clock before the Welshman stepped up to confidently slot the penalty home.

Liverpool gradually got a foothold in the game, but were dealt a huge blow when captain Steven Gerrard was sent off for an ungainly lunge on Michael Carrick after half an hour. The decision appeared to be correct, though, as a contest, the game suffered as a result.

The match ended 1-0 to United primarily thanks to a string of second half saves by Pepe Reina in the Liverpool net, as United began to make their one-man advantage pay.

Manchester United will travel to Southampton in the fourth round.

Tottenham 3-0 Charlton

Spurs secured their progression to round four with a routine 3-0 home win over Charlton Athletic.

A second half goal from débutant Andros Townsend on 49 minutes opened the scoring for Spurs before a Jermain Defoe brace (58, 60 mins) secured the win.

Spurs will face Fulham away in the next round.

  1. We played much better (at least in defence) than has been the norm this season. Did not expect us to stand a chance, and the sent off of Gerrard just about killed the contest.
We should contest the penalty decision, and Berbatov should get a red card (only fair). Another reason why technology is needed in football. While we can clearly see what actually happened in slow-mo, the ref (did it have to be Howard Webb – whenever we play an important game, he’s sure to be the ref – conspiracy!) has to make the decision on the fly.

One good thing is that we now have a coach (albeit temporary) who has backbone. Leaders must be brave, or become followers.

    • Yeah rgt. But I m worried as Chelsea arent winning matches that they should be winning with margins like this FA cup match against Ipswich….a team like Wolves should have been hammered by Chelsea..instead Chelsea lost 1-0…….. it was heart breaking
