All but five FA Cup 2011 Third Round matches took place on Saturday 8th January 2011.
As the round where the Barclays Premier League teams enter the fray, there is always interest in the Third Round of the English FA Cup, with many neutral fans looking for excitement and upset. On Saturday, this arrived, primarily, in matches involving the big three teams from the North East of England, Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
All three North East sides were beaten by clubs from lower leagues, including Premier League Newcastle, who fell to a 3-1 defeat away at Stevenage. Sunderland, also of the English Premier League, lost 2-1 at home to League One Notts County, while Middlesbrough, of the Championship, were beaten by League Two Burton Albion, 2-1 away from home.
Elsewhere, Leeds United nearly caused a huge upset away at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, when they took the lead through a 54th minute Snodgrass penalty, but Cesc Fabregas saved the Gunners’ blushes with a penalty of his own in the 90th minute. Arsenal must travel to Leeds’ Elland Road to replay this fixture.
