FA Community Shield 2011: Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United

A remarkable Manchester Derby took place at Wembley on the afternoon of Sunday 7th August 2011, as new pretenders Manchester City took on the old-time might of Manchester United in the FA Community Shield which, as is traditional, marks the return of top-flight football to the English league calendar.

In a scintillating match, in which five goals were scored, Manchester United came back from 2-0 down at half time against their old enemy to collect the Community Shield with a 3-2 win, following a brace from Nani – who scored the winner in the 94th minute of play.

City had the best of the first half, and were in front just before half time when a long free-kick was poorly dealt with by new United goalkeeper David De Gea, who missed the floated ball, allowing Jolean Lescott to head home for a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, and City had the vital second goal just before half time when Edin Dzeko hit a hopeful low shot from 30 yards which De Gea, who might still have been stunned from his earlier blunder, contrived to allow into the corner of his net, by diving too late as he back-peddled.

City’s second goal, however, appeared only to fire up United, who emerged with more purpose in the second half, and turned around their afternoon with two goals in quick succession: first Chris Smalling (52) turned home an Ashley Young free-kick before Nani (58) put the Red Devils level on 58 minutes, signaling the start of an absorbing period of play.

Despite the Community Shield being regarded as a somewhat pedestrian affair in recent years, there was real mettle in this match, and it was clear that both players and fans were keen to settle some scores and gain local bragging rights from this match in London.

It looked as if this would come down to the penalty shootout – for there is no extra time in this competition – until Nani burst onto the ball in the City area following some tremendous United attacking play before rounding Joe Hart and coolly slotting home to give his team the win – and the bragging rights – with the clock on 90+4 minutes.
