Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Everton – Barclays Premier League 2011/12 Result

Tottenham 2-0 Everton
Lennon 35
Assuo-Ekotto 63

Tottenham Hotspur have drawn level with Manchester United in second place of the Barclays Premier League 2011/12 table after winning their rearranged home fixture with Everton, 2-0, at White Hart Lane on the evening of 11 January 2012.

A goal in either half saw Spurs collect three points which places them just three behind Manchester City – whom they meet next weekend in the league – following a match the hosts had dominated on every level.

Michael Dawson captained Tottenham, starting his first Premier League match since their 5-1 home humbling at the hands of Manchester City in August. He will have been pleased with the contrast tonight as Spurs worked a well-earned clean sheet.

Despite good early pressure, and a couple of chances falling to Emmanuel Adebayor, it was Aaron Lennon who eventually got Tottenham into the lead, when he cut in before firing home in the 35th minute.

In the second half, more Tottenham pressure was capped by a rare goal for Benoit Assou-Ekotto whose long range effort deflected off Tim Cahill before flying into the corner on 63 minutes.

Everton did come back into the match a little at the end, including having a penalty appeal turned down, but it would prove to be too little, too late for the travelling Toffees, as they could only watch Spurs collect the points which drew them closer to the top of the table.

Spurs finished the match 3rd in the league, eight points clear of Chelsea who are 4th, and nine clear of Arsenal who sit just outside the UEFA Champions League places in 5th. The result puts Everton squarely in mid table, in 11th place.

Tottenham’s match away at Manchester City a week on Sunday – on the same day (January 22nd) as Man Utd travel to Arsenal – looks like being another massive match between the two clubs who have emerged as the biggest pretenders in recent seasons.
