Manchester United finally got some points for their new manager in the 2022/23 season, thanks to an unlikely 2-1 home win over arch-rivals Liverpool, who are also looking out of sorts.
Jadon Sancho finished cooly to give United the lead after 15 minutes, as he took his time, sold a dummy inside the box, before passing it into the bottom left corner. It was not undeserved, either, as United had struck the post moments earlier, through Elanga who had been clean through following a long ball from McTominey being deflected into his path by Fernandes.
Liverpool are struggling to get this season underway, and their woes were doubled in the second half, when the terrifically out of form Marcus Rashford dusted himself off, to bag from a one-on-one after Martial played him through.
This came after both sides rode their luck at the end of the first half. First Eriksen went close with a free kick tipped over the bar by the Liverpool goalkeeper, before a horrible mixup at the back saw United coming close to scoring a comical own goal.
The final ten minutes were very nervy for the home side, after Salah, ever Liverpool’s talisman, scored to reduce the deficit, however, 2-1 it would remain until the final whistle giving United a much needed three points, to lift them from an unfamiliar foot of the table position.
Liverpool finished the match fifth from bottom, having picked up only two points from their opening three matches.
