In the biggest of the big quartet of transfer moves on yesterday’s deadline day, Barclays Premier League Champions, Chelsea, secured the services of Liverpool’s prolific striker, Fernando Torres.
Torres signed for the blues after Liverpool accepted their offer, which is believed to have been in the region of £50million.
According to his website, Torres put pen to paper on a deal which runs until June 2016.
In an interesting quirk of the fixture list, Chelsea are due to face Liverpool on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, though Torres signed too late to be eligible for tonight’s match away at Sunderland.
However, Torres faces stiff competition for a place in the starting line-up on Sunday and into the future, as Chelsea have played well over the past few seasons with Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka forming a formidable partnership.
Speaking of his new-found competition for a first team place, Torres said:
I know there are many great players here and I will work hard to win a place in the team.
This will likely be in stark contrast to the experience he had at Liverpool, where he was the most important player in the squad, and, when fit, was more often than not the first or second name on the team sheet.
To deepen their selection pool, Liverpool went straight out and found two players for (almost) the price of one, by signing Andy Carroll from Newcastle (£35million), and Luis Suarez from Ajax (£22.7million).
Still, as the most expensive player at one of the biggest clubs in Europe, Fernando Torres looks likely to add to his already impressive array of winners medals.
Bringing Torres 2 Stanford Bridge is one of d greatest acheivement by Anceloti. Up d Blues!
