Seven Barclays Premier League matches took place on the eve of Tuesday 28th December 2010.
Birmingham crept one point closer to safety in thei clash with Manchester United, who were top of the table before this match. Birmingham picked up their point courtesy of a 1-1 draw, despite falling a goal behind to a second half Berbatov strike. Lee Bowyer’s goal two minutes from time handed them a share of the points.
Across town rivals to United, Manchester City gained a share of the league lead (though they remain behind on goal difference) with a stunning 4-0 win at home to Aston Villa. A Balotelli hat-trick (which included two penalties) added to a Jolean Lescott opener for the hosts, who look like they could be hitting Championship-winning form.
Fulham kept themselves out of the bottom three by a hair’s breadth with a solid 2-0 win away at Stoke, courtesy of two goals in the opening ten minutes from defender Chris Baird.
Blackpool climbed to 8th place by winning 2-0 away at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light thanks to a brace of goals from the in-form DJ Campbell.
Wingers Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon grabbed a goal each in the second half to push Tottenham Hotspur up to the top four – at the expense of Chelsea who slide to fifth following Monday night’s defeat at the hands of Arsenal. Spurs picked up three points away at Newcastle’s St James’ Park with a good 2-0 victory, and manager Harry Redknapp will be pleased to have – at last – kept a clean sheet in the process.
West Brom played well, once more, but fell to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Blackburn, who are fast becoming this season’s Jekyll and Hyde team. As if to sum up their flip-flopping fortunes, Nikola Kalinic scored twice before being sent off for the visiting Rovers.
West Ham showed their fans that safety is still a real prospect for 2010/11 by going a goal up at home to Everton, with an own goal from Hibbert, before being pegged back late in the opening half by a Coleman finish on 42 minutes. The scores remained 1-1 at full-time, leaving the Hammers second bottom in the league, on 17 points, two points from safety.
