Football: Barclays Premier League Results, Sunday 26 December 2010

Six Barclays Premier League matches have taken place on Boxing Day, Sunday 26th December 2010.

The matches between Blackpool v Liverpool and Everton v Birmingham were postponed due to the freezing weather.

In the day’s early kick-off, West Ham lifted themselves from the foot of the table, and ensured Fulham would join them in the drop zone by winning 3-1 away at Craven Cottage. A brace from Carlton Cole proved to be the difference between the two London sides.

Stoke moved up to 8th in the league with a solid 2-0 win away at Blackburn, who slide to 13th.

Bolton move up to fifth in the league, at least until this evening, courtesy of a 2-0 home win over West Brom, despite the Baggies producing some good football throughout this close encounter. Goals at the end of each half, from Taylor (40 mins) and Elmander (86 mins) proved to be the difference between these two mid-table sides.

Manchester United remain top following their solid 2-0 home win over Sunderland at Old Trafford. A goal in each half for Dimitar Berbatov was enough to secure the Red Devils win despite lacking Nani and Darren Fletcher for this Boxing Day clash.

Man Utd remain two points ahead of Man City, who picked up three more important points away at Newcastle. Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez got the visitors off to the best of starts: City were 2-0 up inside 5 minutes, before Andy Carroll headed one back for the hosts in the second half. Tevez, newly committed to the club, doubled his personal tally to take away black and white hopes of a comeback in the 81st minute, giving City a 3-1 victory.

Wolves and Wigan had a relegation six pointer, of which Wigan came out the better, winning 2-1 away at Molineux. Rodallega and Cleverley put the visitors 2-0 within 20 minutes before Fletcher gave the home supporters hope three minutes from full time, but Wigan held out for a vital win that puts them up to 16th, two points clear of the drop zone.

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur play in this evening’s late kick-off (5:30pm GMT) while Arsenal face Chelsea tomorrow evening (8pm GMT).
