Football: Barclays Premier League Fixtures, Saturday 1 January 2011

There are eight Barclays Premier League fixtures for Saturday 1st January 2011.

West Brom v Man Utd – Kick-Off (GMT) 12:45

West Bromwich Albion entertain top of the league Manchester United, in today’s early kick-off, having gone three matches without winning. Despite starting the season in fine form, West Brom, 14th in the league, are now just three points from the drop zone. They will be hoping for better result today, though they may have to settle for a point against a Man Utd side that is yet to be beaten this season. If United have a problem, it is finding the extra goal away from home, to which seven draws from eight away matches this term would attest.

Liverpool v Bolton – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

Liverpool have endured one of the worst first halves of any season in living memory, culminating with their last-match humbling at the hands of bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers, which leaves them just three points above the relegation places in 12th place, so tight is it in the bottom half of Premier League 2010/11. Bolton are moving in an opposite direction, and sit sixth in the table. A win for Bolton would see them consolidate that, and might well see Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson run out of chances: the feeling is that this could be a make or break game for him.

Man City v Blackpool – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

Manchester City share the league lead following their impressive 4-0 scoreline against Aston Villa last time out, and will be hoping to keep their push for the top of the table on track at home to this season’s surprise package, Blackpool, who are eigth in the league with three games in hand on those around them, and appear to be almost sure of league safety even at this early stage of the season.

Stoke City v Everton – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

Stoke entertain Everton in a tough to predict 10th v 11th encounter. With both of these sides capable of playing good football, scoring goals, but also of putting on an occassional horror show, it is difficult to judge exactly who will win this one today. A draw is perhaps the most likely result, though either side has the firepower to win this one. Everton’s slight indecision in front of goal means that Stoke, with home advantage, could be the safer bet to be victors today.

Sunderland v Blackburn – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

Sunderland have followed impressive displays this season with poor performances in games from which they would have hoped to record a result, so they will be hoping for points from this home match against another of this season’s inconsistent performers, Blackburn Rovers.

Tottenham v Fulham – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

With Chelsea due to face Aston Villa tomorrow, Tottenham Hotspur have another opportunity to get into the all important Champions League places, if only for 24 hours, with a win today. Fulham need at least a point to get out of the relegation zone.

West Ham v Wolves – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

West Ham and Wolverhampton Wanderers have a high stakes six-point match in which the winner will probably be out of the relegation zone for the first time in months, and the losing side will remain deep in the mire. Both of these teams are good enough to stay up whatever the result today, but a win in this game will provide a huge morale boost for whichever side is able to produce. An entertaining prospect, even at this early stage of the season.

Birmingham v Arsenal – Kick-Off (GMT) 17:30

Arsenal sit in third position in the league, two points behind the two Manchester teams, so they will be hoping for better today than the solitary point Manchester United managed in their trip to Birmingham earlier this week. Birmingham are only out of the bottom three relegation places courtesy of a marginally superior goal difference on Fulham: they will be looking to get at least a point or better from today’s evening kick-off match.
