Football: Barclays Premier League 2011/12 Fixtures, Saturday 11 February 2012

An exciting day of football awaits fans of the Barclays Premier League on Saturday 11th February 2012, as eight matches take place across the afternoon

Man Utd v Liverpoool – Kick-Off (GMT) 12:45

The day begins with another renewal of a big rivalry: Manchester United v Liverpool. Liverpool landed a recent blow in their FA Cup victory over United, but the Manchester side are a different prospect in the Premier League, a title they currently hold. Liverpool need a result to maintain a push for European football next season; United need a win to keep up the pressure on Man City who are two points above them in the table. An exciting game is on the cards at an early kick-0ff time of 12:45, as a result.

Blackburn v QPR – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

This is definitely a relegation battle at Ewood Park: Blackburn start the match 19th of 20, two points from safety; QPR are safe in 16th, but only by one point, three points above Rovers. Whoever wins this match may finish out of the drop zone, the loser may be in it. There’s a phrase for that: six-pointer.

Bolton v Wigan – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

Another six point match takes place at Bolton Wanderer’s Reebok Stadium: Wigan start today bottom of the league, five points from safety. Bolton are just four points above them but, as things stand, both sides would drop to the Championship if the season ended right now. A hugely important match for two North-Western clubs.

Everton v Chelsea – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

Two blue sides who are having a worse season than they might have expected face off in Everton’s Goodison Park with both sides looking for a win to put their fortunes back on track. Both Everton and Chelsea’s problems have been based around a lack of goals, so this match feels like one of those “teams are due a goal-fest” matches which could see one or the other bag a hat-full. Liekwise, it could also be a stalemate. It just might be Chelsea’s day to start scoring though, one feels.

Fulham v Stoke – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

Fulham are three points behind Stoke in the table, so this is another of those intriguing battles that the Premier League seems to throw up with incredible regularity in 2011/12. Both sides have been guilty of following impressive results with flat performances this season, too, so this match may well spell some entertainment for the neutral, and a nail-biting roller-coaster for those involved.

Sunderland v Arsenal – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

Sunderland and Arsenal get to eye each other ahead of their FA Cup Fifth Round clash in a week’s time. Sunderland are a club very much on the up and up, though Martin O’Neill’s men are facing one of their toughest tasks since the mercurial Northern Irishman took over at the helm. Arsenal have begun to show more than green shoots of recovery of late, including when blitzing Blackburn Rovers last time out, so Sunderland, even at the Stadium of Light, may well need to adopt a cautious approach to the match. This might have a few goals in it, too, as both sides have the key to unlocking even the tightest of defences: something which neither Arsenal nor Sunderland currently possess.

Swansea v Norwich – Kick-Off (GMT) 15:00

Two promoted clubs which are flying higher than many expected – Swansea are 9th, Norwich 10th – face off to see if they need to switch positions from the two point lead the Swans currently enjoy over the Canaries. Swansea have been most excellent at home, while Norwich have done most of their winning at Carrow Road, which spells, on paper, a home victory. However, Norwich have shown they are made of stern stuff this season, which suggests a draw, or, with solid defending, even an away victory, is also possible. So no predictions for this one, either.

Tottenham v Newcastle – Kick-Off (GMT) 17:30

The day’s football ends with two sides who are, one hesitates to say overachieving, but certainly both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have performed right up to their very best for almost all of this season. Spurs are still in with more than a punchers chance of lifting the title, while Newcastle could, with a win, get into the UEFA Champions League Qualification positions by the evening. A lot is at stake, here, for both sides, though Tottenham have looked tremendous of late, and, apart from one early season hammering from Manchester City, have been excellent at White Hart Lane all this term. A home win looks likely, but then, we’ve been here before with Newcastle this season, and, particularly through the goals of Demba Ba, they’ve routinely grabbed a result. Don’t expect a Spurs walkover.
