All but one of the match week eight fixtures of Barclays Premier League 2014/15 took place on the weekend of Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October 2014.
In all, nine fixtures saw an impressive 35 goals scored, as clubs up and down England and Wales looked to push towards the top of the table.
At the head of affairs, Chelsea maintained their five point lead at the top of the table courtesy of a solid 2-1 win away at QPR. A goal in either half from Oscar (6′) and Fabregas (51′) were enough to keep QPR at bay despite the hosts grabbing a last minute consolation through Campbell (90′) that added some spice to an already incident packed match: both teams had a man red carded, in the first half, as Cesar Azpilicueta was dismissed for Chelsea before Damien Delaney was sent off for the hosts.
Chelsea stay exactly five points ahead of Man City as the sky blues ran out 4-1 winners over Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s evening fixture. All four of City’s goals were scored by Sergio Aguero (13′, 20′ P, 68′ P, 75′) but things could have been different had Spurs scored a first half penalty which was missed by Soldado, and Tottenham created enough chances to suggest the scoreline was a little harsh. Aguero showed why he is key to City’s hopes.
But even Aguero was overshadowed by the most impressive scoreline of the day, down at Southampton’s St Mary’s, where the Saints tore apart Sunderland, and won 8-0. The result, which was Southampton’s biggest ever win in the Premier League, included two own goals, and a brace for Graziano Pelle (18′, 69′) in a result which the Black Cats will need to recover from quickly, with results coming for those around them in the table.
Sunderland’s misery may have been compounded as their bitter rivals over on Tyneside, Newcastle United, saw their recent recovery continue with a 1-0 home win over Leicester City. Gabriel Obertan (71′) scored the winner with 20 minutes remaining on the clock, a goal which wasn’t enough to see them lift out of the relegation places. The Magpies must keep on winning to recover in this most difficult of championships.
Hull City remain in the top half of the table, thanks to a hard-won point away at Arsenal. It could have been so much more, however, as the visitors led until the final minute in a match that finished 2-2. After Sanchez (13′) put the Gunners in front, Diame (17′) and Hernandez (46′) replied for Hull, a 2-1 scoreline which remained until a 90th minute goal from in-form Danny Welbeck (90′). It could have been more for Hull but for three injuries to key men before and during the match: they look a decent outfit this term. Arsenal will be hoping for more at either end if they are to continue their Premier League ambitions.
Instead of Arsenal, it was West Ham who end the weekend filling the final Champions League place, in fourth in the table, after they picked up another strong win, this time a 3-1 victory away at Burnley, who finish the weekend second bottom. Goals from Sakho (49′) Valencia (54′) and Cole (70′) were enough to take home the three points despite a reply from Boyd (60′) on the hour mark.
Everton put their recent good-form-without-a-result period behind them with a 3-0 home win over Aston Villa lifting them several places into 12th. Goals from Jagielka (18′) Lukaku (48′) and Coleman (76′) proved to be more than enough allied with stingy defending to take a much needed confidence boosting home win. They look set for a top half challenge.
On Sunday afternoon, a crazy game at Loftus Road saw Liverpool pick up a 3-2 away win in strange circumstances, which left QPR bottom of the table at the end of Sunday. With three minutes of normal time remaining, Liverpool had been on course for a 1-0 win, thanks to an own goal from Dunne (67′), but there would be four more late goals in a topsy turvy final few minutes the like of which is seldom seen in the Premier League. First, Vargas (87′. 90′) equalised before Coutinho (90′) made an immediate reply. QPR then scored again through Vargas, and home fans must have been about to walk away with a point before another own goal, this time from Caulker (90′) made it 3-2 to Liverpool, who climb to fifth in the table as a result.
Swansea’s good start to the season looked to be well and truly over as they travelled to Stoke City and came away with nothing, despite taking a first half lead. Stoke were revitalised in the second half, and collected three points from a deserved 2-1 home win following goals from Adam (43′ P) and Walters (76′) in response to a Bony (34′ P) penalty.
Manchester United have a chance to go fourth when they travel to West Brom on Monday evening for the weekend’s final fixture.
