The 2013/14 FA Cup on the weekend led to a full book of fixtures in midweek for the Barclays Premier League 2013/14 competition as the teams played out their 23rd match of the season on the evenings of Tuesday and Wednesday 28-29 January 2014.
In an interesting set of fixtures, Manchester City rose to the top of the table, as they took full advantage of Arsenal’s 2-2 draw away at Southampton in winning 5-1 away at Tottenham’s White Hart Lane. Chelsea failed to draw level with Arsenal and remained third after a disappointing 0-0 home draw with West Ham.
Liverpool consolidated fourth place with a strong 4-0 win over fierce rivals Everton on Tuesday evening, while Spurs remain fifth one point ahead of the Toffees after both sides lost points.
Man United are hovering ominously in 7th place, just two points adrift of Everton, after a strong 2-0 home win to now-bottom Cardiff: Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney are fit again, and they are joined by the impressive newly-signed Juan Mata.
At the foot of the table, Cardiff are bottom on 18 points, one behind Fulham who lost to impressive Swansea on Tuesday. West Ham clambered to third-bottom with their Stamford Bridge point, while Sunderland, so long the whipping boys this term, continued their improved form under Gus Poyet and lifted themselves out of the drop zone with a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Mark Hughes’ Stoke City, who slide perilously close to trouble, just a point ahead of the Black Cats.
Stoke are level with West Bromwich Albion, who are in turn one behind Crystal Palace who picked up a good 1-0 win over Hull. Palace look solid under Tony Pulis, and may be starting to worry those around them in the table.
