The fourth week of Barclays Premier League fixtures took place from Saturday 14 to Monday 16 September 2013, and concluded with Liverpool remaining at the top of the table, and Sunderland bottom, following an interesting weekend of football.
Liverpool, who went into the weekend with the only 100% win record after three matches, will count themselves a little fortunate, however, after a strong Swansea home performance saw the Reds return with a point following a 2-2 draw at Liberty Stadium on Monday night.
North London rivals, Spurs and Arsenal had put Liverpool under pressure by joining them on 9 points with wins gained in different styles: Tottenham produced some good football to run out 2-0 winners at home to Norwich, while a topsy-turvy Arsenal saw hapless Sunderland have a goal disallowed before winning in a slightly flattering 3-1 scoeline at the Stadium of Light.
There were draws aplenty on Saturday and Sunday with Stoke v Man City (Sat, 0-0) and Southampton v West Brom (Sun, 0-0) both seeing bore-draws. Fulham v West Brom and Hull v Cardiff finished 1-1 on Saturday.
Champions Manchester United picked up a handy 2-0 win at home to Crystal Palace though looked slightly lacking in last season’s fluency, while the upset of the weekend came as Jose Mourinho tastes Premier League defeat for the first time as his Chelsea side went down 1-0 away at Everton, albeit perhaps against the run of play, in Saturday’s evening kick-off.
Newcastle United rose to the top half of the table after picking up a good away win at Aston Villa, who end the weekend hovering above the relegation zone.
