Barclays Premier League 2013/14: Results, Saturday 21 September

Matchweek 5 of Barclays Premier League 2013/14 kicked-off on Saturday 21 September, when six fixtures took place across the afternoon.

In the day’s early kick-off match, fans of Norwich and Aston Villa watched at Carrow Road as their teams looked to push away from the bottom three. It was to be Aston Villa who claimed the three points, after a 30th minute strike from newcomer Libor Kozak, who was only just on as a substitute for the injured Benteke. 1-0 was to be the final score, a result which leaves Norwich precariously close to the bottom three, safe only thanks to goal difference.

At three o’clock, Southampton fans saw the upset of the day, as their team travelled to high-flying Liverpool – who started the day top of the table – and returned with all three points following a 1-0 away win. Dejan Lovren headed home a corner on 53 minutes to give the Saints an important victory. Despite Liverpool’s superior possession, it was Southampton who worked more shots both on and off target, so the visitors were well worth their win here.

At St James’ Park, the match of the day saw Newcastle lose at home to Hull City 3-2, despite the Magpies twice taking the lead through Remy. Remy scored for the hosts scored on 10 minutes, before Brady equalised in the 26th minute, but were able to take a 2-1 half time lead courtesy of Loic Remy’s second on 44 minutes. In the second half, however, Hull City came storming back, first to equalise through Elmohamady on 48 minutes, then to grab a vital winner after 76 minutes, through a remarkable Sone Aluko volley. The result means Hull leapfrog Newcastle in the table, and move up to 10th. Newcastle are 11th, level on 7 points with The Tigers.

Another entertaining 3-2 away win took place at West Ham, where visiting Everton took all three points away from their trip to London. Morrison got the hosts off to a great start with a goal on the half hour mark, giving West Ham a 1-0 half-time lead, but Leighton Baines equalised with a free-kick on 62 minutes. West Ham got their noses in front with a penalty from Noble (76 mins), but again Baines (83 mins) cancelled this out with a well struck free-kick, before, two minutes later, Romelu Lukaku (85 mins) completed the turnaround with a headed winner for the Toffees.

Sunderland end the day rooted to the bottom of the table after slipping to a 3-0 away defeat to West Brom, who were just one place above them, in 19th, at the start of the match. The Baggies opened the scoring through former Sunderland man, Stephane Sessegnon on 20 minutes, before wrapping up the points with two goals in the final quarter from Ridgewell (76 mins) and Amalfitano (90 mins).

In the day’s evening kick-off, Chelsea reversed their recent fortunes, and picked up a 2-0 home win over Fulham to move up to the top of the table – if only for a day – with second half goals coming from Oscar (52 mins) and Mikel (84 mins).
