A full complement of Barclays Premier League 2013/14 fixtures took place in the 11th matchweek for the competition on the weekend of 9-10th November 2013.
On Saturday, Liverpool and Southampton both scored four goals at home as they won 4-0 and 4-1 respectively against Fulham and Hull City. By the end of the weekend, Fulham were in the relegation places, as their poor start to the season continued. Liverpool and Southampton, on the other hand, rose to 2nd and 3rd in the table.
Chelsea ended the weekend fourth, but will be disappointed not to have done better at home to West Brom, against whom they could only muster a point following a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. It could have been worse, though, for the Blues needed a penalty deep in injury time to save a point despite having led for much of the match.
Norwich leap-frogged West Ham in the table as they recovered from their 7-0 drubbing last week to overcome the London outfit. Sam Allerdyce’s men need to get a result to prevent a blip turning into something more serious: only goal difference currently keeps them out of the drop zone.
On Sunday, Man Utd v Arsenal was the big match of the weekend, and it was the Red Devils who continued their return to form with a 1-0 win coming from Gunners old boy Robin van Persie’s head – from a Wayne Rooney corner – as United’s forwards combined yet again to produce a key moment. It was no less than United deserved on a day when Arsenal – as often recently – produced few chances going forwards. Arsenal still lead the Premier League, but only by two points over Liverpool. All those who were hoping United were dead and buried will be a little concerned at how quickly they have recovered to be placed fifth, just five points from the top of the table.
The most surprising result of the weekend was Sunderland’s 1-0 win at home to Manchester City, who are quickly establishing themselves as the most inconsistent side in the top flight. Phil Bardsey’s first half strike was enough for the Black Cats to seal three unlikely points and continue their resurgence under new manager Gus Poyet.
Sunday also saw Tottenham dominant at home to Newcastle, yet losing 1-0. Spurs’ problem, this season, it would seem, being their inability to turn good possession into goals. Newcastle, on the other hand, for the second week running, showed they have quite the opposite ability: to soak up long spells of pressure and produce vital goals from scant opportunities. The law of averages, however, says Tottenham will be above Newcastle come the season’s end.
The most entertaining result of the weekend was surely Swansea and Stoke’s 3-3 draw in Wales, where visiting Stoke took a 2-0 lead into half time, before the hosts turned things around to lead 3-2 after 90 minutes. A late late penalty from Stoke’s Charlie Adams was enough for a share of the points on a topsy-turvy autumn evening at the Liberty Stadium.
