Football: Rafa Benitez in Talks with Inter Milan

Liverpool FC’s recently departed coach, Rafa Benitez, may be manager of UEFA Champions League winners, Inter, by the end of the week according to reports from European newspapers.

It is believed that Benitez has been offered a contract worth in the region of €5million per annum, during a meeting Benitez had with Inter president Massimo Moratti on Monday.

Moratti was reported as saying:

“There were no problems in our discussions, but to say it is a five-year contract worth five million euros a year is far from reality.

I do not want to say how much we will be paying him, but we did manage to cover many aspects and we are convinced about him being the right man. We spoke about a lot of things, including who he wants on his staff.”

Benitez has many admirers around Europe, not least because he managed to put Liverpool into consecutive UEFA Champions League Finals in his first two seasons with the club, winning the all-important trophy at the first attempt in 2007.

The suggestion in both reports is that Benitez has identified key backroom and playing staff he would like to target, and Moratti has briefly discussed a budget for such moves.

It remains to be seen if Benitez can be tempted to make an immediate return to top-flight management after enduring a difficult season with Liverpool this term.
