David Beckham this weekend saw his hopes of making FIFA World Cup 2010 this summer cruelly dashed as he tore an achilles tendon playing for AC Milan against Chievo.
The tournament was to be Beckham’s fourth as a player.
Beckham flies to Helsinki today for an operation on the injured ankle, but is expected to be out of action for at least five months.
While there had been many questions over whether or not it would be sensible to take a player so clearly in the twighlight of his career to the World Cup Finals in South Africa. Fabio Capello, the England manager, was clearly toying with the possibility of taking the experienced influence of Beckham, as he had selected him as a squad player in England’s most recent friendly.
It looks as though this injury could bring the curtain down on David Beckham’s international football career, in which case, it is a sad way for the former captain to end what has been an eventful thirteen years since he made his debut on 1 September 1996.
David Beckham has amassed 115 caps since that debut for his country.
