Another football match has fallen victim to the UK weather today as the Barclays Premier League clash between Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers which was due to be played this evening has been postponed due to safety concerns.
As ever with top-flight clubs, Arsenal were able to produce a playable surface at the Emirates Stadium, however, the safety of fans getting to and from the match – not least those who would travel from the North West of England – prompted officials to call the match off.
The postponement follows the cancellation of both of this week’s Carling Cup Semi-Finals, and every UK horse racing meeting which had been due to take place today.
How frustrating must it be for those clubs who have gone to the expense of undersoil heating, to have a match postoned by the Health & Safety brigade. Are we breading a nation of spineless, politically correct, idle do gooders? I live in a village and our local Co-op store was closed 2 hours early last evening, for safety reasons of course. None of the staff live more than 800 yards from the store and they all went home for fear of getting stuck overnight in the 2 inch snow drift along the High Street. I had to drive my grandson back to college in Leicester yesterday, a round trip of nearly 200 miles and they couldn’t face a short walk home.
