Mexico qualify thanks to a superior goal difference they have over South Africa, with whom they are tied in second place on 4 points.
But it was to be a nervy end to this match for Mexico after Suarez gave home fans some hope of qualification when he scored with a 43rd minute header from an Edinson Cavani cross.
Mexico pressed hard in the final stages to grab an equaliser that would assure qualification but Uruguay maintained their 100% 2010 World Cup clean sheet record with some manful deep defending, comfortable in the knowledge that huge numbers of goals would have to pour into more than just their net to upset their progression.
By winning this match, and Group A, Uruguay will likely have avoided the impressive Argentina – the winner of Group B will play Mexico in the round of 16.
