Gonzalo Azcarraga: “The Equestrian Sport in Mexico has changed a lot!” | Rider in Focus

This week’s Rider in Focus Gonzalo Azcarraga comes from a family of Riders. His father Jaime has represented his country to the highest level and the 29 years old Gonzalo is following his footsteps.

“I started riding when I was 8 years old. For us, it’s kind of a family sport. My dad has been riding his whole life. We just grow up into it and we love the sport and we’ve been around horses all our lives.”

“My personal ambition is to compete for my country, go to the Olympic Games, the Panamerican Games, World Equestrian Games, etc. I already had the opportunity to compete in the Central American Games like five years ago. I had good results there and I think it’s about the moment with the horse and when you get it you get it!”

Mexico is a country in the southern portion of North America. It is the most populous Spanish-speaking nation. Mexico City is its capital city and largest metropolis.

Mexico became an independent nation state after the successful Mexican War of Independence against Spain in 1821.

Mexico is a developing country, but has the world’s 15th-largest economy by nominal GDP and the 11th-largest by PPP, with the United States being its largest economic partner. Since 2006, a conflict between the government and drug trafficking syndicates has led to over 120,000 deaths.

Mexico receives a significant number of tourists every year; in 2018, it was the 6th most-visited country in the world, with 39 million international arrivals.
