Comme toujours depuis 1969, Eddy Merckx est le grand favori du Tour de France au départ de l’édition 1975. Au départ de la 15e étape en direction de Pra-Loup, les commentateurs se posent toutefois des questions sur le potentiel du champion belge, frappé la veille d’un coup de poing au foie par un spectateur dans la montée au Puy-de-Dôme. Incident de mauvaise augure ou atteinte réelle portée à son physique… quoi qu’il en soit, ce n’est plus le grand Merckx que l’on observe dans la montée de Pra-Loup. Alors qu’il avait anticipé en solo en prenant la tête dans la montée au col d’Allos, il faiblit dans les deniers kilomètres de l’étape et subit le retour de Bernard Thévenet. C’est en réalité à une fin de règne qu’assistent les spectateurs en même temps qu’à la prise du pouvoir du Français, qui endosse le Maillot Jaune avec 57’’ d’avance.
