Le Tour a déjà visité l’Angleterre, en 1994 et également en 2007 pour un Grand Départ donné de Londres. Cette fois-ci, c’est dans le Yorkshire qu’est attendu le peloton. L’équipe Sky a porté au sommet deux coureurs britanniques, Bradley Wiggins et Chris Froome, lors des deux éditions précédentes. L’engouement pour le cyclisme suscité par ces succès se constate sur les bords des routes dès la première étape, tracée entre Leeds et Harrogate : les coureurs progressent au milieu d’une foule dense, joyeuse et colorée. La victoire semble promise à Mark Cavendish, l’enfant du pays… qui se brise finalement la clavicule juste avant l’arrivée et laisse à Marcel Kittel l’honneur de se faire habiller de jaune par la Duchesse de Cambridge.
