The Ashes 2010/11 Cricket: Hussey Helps Australia Edge Second Day in Brisbane

Michael Hussey put on 81 not out to help Australia build a solid position on day two of the first Ashes 2010/11 test match at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Australia finished the day on 220-5 chasing England’s 260 all out.

James Anderson was England’s best bowler, as he collected 2 for 40, while Steven Finn produced a good couple of wickets to record 2 for 61 in his first Ashes test match.

Australia started well, but went from 96 for 1 wicket to 143 for 5 wickets before Hussey – in poor form going into this series – established himself at the crease to settle the ship.

The day ended with the players already in for bad light, before a storm led to the remainder being called off early. More rain is expected over the rest of this match, reducing the odds of a drawn first test.

Australia have wickets in hand, but a couple of early strikes for England will see first innings honours just about even if they can remove the Australians before lunch on day three.

This test match is evenly poised, after two days.

In This Story: The Ashes

The Ashes is a Test cricket series played between England and Australia. The term originated in a satirical obituary published in a British newspaper, The Sporting Times, immediately after Australia’s 1882 victory at The Oval, its first Test win on English soil.

The competition alternates between England and Australia, who host every two years (this varies a little based on the Southern Hemisphere having summer during Northern Hemisphere’s winter), the Ashes is a series of five Test matches, which are each played over five days.
