England have struck back with an excellent day of cricket in reply to Australia’s record-breaking third day at the Gabba, Brisbane in the opening Ashes 2010/11 test match. Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook produced a record English partnership of 188 as England took a lead of 88 runs into the final day.
The tourists ended with 309-1 from their second innings at stumps on day four.
Cook was the pick of the batsmen: he ended the day on 132 not out, while captain Strauss also performed admirably, with 110 before he was eventually stumped by Haddin off the bowling of North. Strauss was the only wicket of the day on a flat track.
Jonathan Trott came in and continued the good English fightback by adding a further 54 runs, not out, in a partnership with Cook worth 121 runs.
The score means that, unless Australia can lift their bowlers – fast and early – on the final day, this match looks to be heading towards a draw. Cook and Strauss both produced a vital innings when it was most required, as had Hussey and Haddin for the hosts yesterday.
