ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: South Africa Defeat Netherlands by 231 Runs

South Africa have inflicted a heavy defeat upon the Netherlands in their ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 Group B match on Thursday 3rd March 2011, in Mohali, India.

The Proteas set a total of 351 for 5 from 50 overs, to which Netherlands could only respond with 120 All Out from 34.5 overs, meaning that South Africa won by 231 runs.

South Africa’s huge total was primarily thanks to centuries from Amla (113) and another top score from the ever-impressive AB de Villiers (134).

Netherlands bowlers had a miserable time of it against the free scoring South Africans with only ten Doeschate, who took 3 wickets for 72 runs from his 10 overs, making a real impression, as South Africa played their way to 351 runs for just 5 wickets.

The Netherlands batting attack once more failed to perform, and only Barresi (44), who looked to be on his way to a deserved half century when he was stumped by van Wyk from the bowling of Duminy, impressed with the bat for them.

Each South African bowler played their part as wickets were shared around, and economy rates were kept low, though Tahir recorded the best figures of the day with 3 wickets for 19 runs coming from 6.5 overs, as he effectively swept away the Netherlands tail enders who offered scant resistance.

South Africa are quickly building a head of steam which could take them far in this competition, in particular, AB de Villiers has looked in a league of his own each time he has taken to the crease, and that confidence seems to be spreading among the other Proteas batsmen.

Netherlands, who started this tournament brightly, will need to regroup before their next match if they are to record a victory in this tournament.
