As lunch was called at Trent Bridge on the first day of the four test series between England and Pakistan, England, who had won the toss and elected to bat, came in with their score sitting on 104 for 2 wickets, from 34 overs of Pakistan bowling.
This situation might have been worse for England, but they coped well with some terrific bowling from Aamer and Asif who were thundering an occassional unplayable delivery down the Trent Bridge track. The former, Aamer, took both wickets of the morning, by taking both openers Strauss (45) caught Kamran Akmal, and Cook (8) caught Farhat.
Immediately after lunch, however, it could have got worse for the hosts, as Kevin Pietersen was nearly given out LBW – the referral from Pakistan showed the ball from Asif would have barely clipped the bail and the not out decision stood.
Pietersen, it is felt, will need to get to 50 if he is to help the hosts to a reasonable score on this tricky wicket.
