Commonwealth Games: Canada Takes Women’s Individual 29K Cycling Time Trial

Canada have won gold in the women’s individual 29km cycling time trial, with New Zealand and England taking silver and bronze respectively. Tara Whitten took the top spot with a time of 38:59.30. She said:

“I knew this course would suit me well. I’m not so good on technical courses, so straight and fast is ideal for me. I just put my head down and went. My only strategy was not to go too fast in the beginning. I knew I stood a good chance to medal.

“The main challenge was the heat. Before the race, everyone was wearing ice packs and putting on wet towels to stay cool. I put some ice on my back before the start.”

Julia Shaw of England was pleased with her result after nearly considering retiring last year. The 45-year old took bronze and will receive her medal at 11:45 local time.
