The Full List
10) Manny Pacquiao v Ricky Hatton – 2 May 2009
Pac-man took Hatton out clean with a huge left, with just nine seconds of Round 2 left in their hugely anticipated bout of May 2 2009. Hatton got nailed right on the chin, and he was clearly done the moment the shot landed.
9) Dave Allen v Nick Webb – 28 July 2018
As the clock ticked down in the fourth round of this otherwise close contest, Dave Allen produced a stunning combination, following a low body shot with a powerful overhand right, which was enough to leave Webb unable to stand. The jarring shot landed square, and would have stopped anyone.
8) Wayne Alexander v Takaloo – 10 September 2004
Alexander looked to be in trouble, facing an onslaught of shots from his opponent, but, shifting his weight to the left, landed with a delightful left hook which knocked Takaloo clean out. Job done.
7) Ashley Sexton v Usman Ahmed – 22 January 2010
Half way through the opening round, Sexton put Ahmed out of the contest with a clean overhand right, which landed on Ahmed’s chin. Two minutes was enough for him to score this knockout victory.
6) Callum Smith v Luke Blackledge – 10 December 2016
Some knockouts come early, some come late. This one was deep in the tenth round of this gruelling bout between Callum Smith and Luke Blackledge. Smith produced a stunning left which Blackledge walked straight onto, after missing with his own shot. And that was all she wrote.
5) Dmitry Bivol v Trent Broadhurst – 4 November 2017
Literally a second or two before the closing bell, Bivol snapped out a right hand which ended the contest; he was clean out from a clean blow to the chin.
4) Audley Harrison v Michael Sprott II – 9 April 2010
Harrison wanted to get his revenge on Sprott in this rematch, but it looked like this one, too, may have been slipping away from the Olympian, before he produced a left hook which ended the contest in one shot – in the final round of a bout Harrison looked like he may have been losing.
3) Dillian Whyte v Derek Chisora II – 22 December 2018
Another rematch knockout, this one from Dillian Whyte came in the 11th round of a fight which was looking close. He produced a lovely left hand which came from Chisora’s blind-spot as the latter was himself searching for a big shot, with the feeling he was slightly behind. Deep in the 11th round, it was all over.
2) Carl Froch v George Groves II – 31 May 2014
Froch v Groves was a huge fight, and it ended with a terrific knockout win for Froch after he landed with an overhand right that ended the contest deep in the eighth round. For the occasion – and in it’s own right – one of the best shots in recent boxing history. Groves, who had been going well in this entrancing fight, was left with his leg curled under him. Over.
1) Deontay Wilder v Luis Ortiz II – 23 November 2019
Then champion, Wilder, was looking all at sea against Ortiz, and in truth, was behind on the scorecard. But his phenomenal stopping power was in evidence as he produced a super-fast right hand which took Ortiz off his feet. A power punch which ended the contest with 5 seconds of the seventh round remaining. Lights out.
Thoughts & Comments
Since this list only goes back to 2004, and mostly features fights which were shown on Britain’s Sky Sports – a strong UK bias – we can’t really describe these are “from boxing history” because… well, obvious reasons. Still, it is interesting to compare recent moments from boxing history in this way, even if the title is a little bit click-baity. Leave your comments below with your favourites from further back – or any glaring omissions from this list you feel should have been included.
