It is actually pretty amazing how much technological savvy and financial resources went into creating a visual aid as basic as the yellow first down line.

Especially, considering how close the yellow line now is to being completely accurate. A 2011 study conducted by SportVision determined the yellow line has an average margin of error of 1.38 inches compared to the official first down marker.

Not too shabby…
