Showjumping: Marcus Ehning Wins 3rd World Cup in Geneva

German gun showjumping rider Marcus Ehning confirmed in Geneva yesterday that he is ultimate international competitor by winning his 3rd World Cup Final on his two horses Noltes Kuchengirl and Plot Blue. Germany dominated the podium with Ludger Beerbaum on Gother 2nd, and Switzerland’s Pius Schwizer in 3rd place.

It was not all easy for Ehning though.

Sitting in 3rd place after day 2 of the gruelling 3 day program, Ehning had to find something extra to jump clean rounds over designer Rolf Ludi’s course.

A rail in the first round of the final day put the pressure on, but Plot Blue and Ehning, under enormous pressure put in a brillinat 2nd clear round to take the title.  It’s an example of the temprament needed at this level of competition for Ehning to win the big titles time and time again.

Other significant performances were Chris Chugg of Australia riding the 11 year old Vivant finishing 7th, an amazing achievement for the Australian based rider.  Chugg is known for his flamboyant style, and the large crowd and world class riders didn’t imtimidate his performance, thrilling the crowd with a clear round in the second leg of the final day, and capping it off with a canter pirrouette after completing the course.

Mario Deslauriers riding the 9 year old Urico almost completed a fairy tale 2nd World CUp win, 26 years after winning his first. Mario now rides for the US after changing nationality from his native Canada. In 2nd place after day two, Mario would’ve been confident of pushing for the win, but an unlucky 3 fences down in the final round relegated them to 6th place.

“After the first round I thought it was all over” Ehning said afterwards, “but I motivated myself again and decided to fight back.  I would have been very happy to have finished second and I feel very sorry for Mario who had such a great show”  Ehning made history by being the first ever rider to win while competing two horses at the World Cup Final.

Pius Schwizer – “it has been a pleasure to compete here at home in Switzerland – I’m very proud of this wonderful show”
