Working together for the climate in the Middle East

Dr Maya Negev is an Israeli climate scientist working to bring researchers together across political borders to combat climate change in the Middle East
.

The Middle East is a climate hotspot, with temperatures rising faster than the global average. The population in the Middle East is also particularly vulnerable to climate change, with pressures such as conflicts, water shortages and high population density.

In this talk, Dr Negev gives an overview of the climate crisis facing the Middle East and how the opportunities provided through the Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowship have shaped her career.

She explains the challenges of higher temperatures leading to increased illness and death, especially among vulnerable people, as well as diseases spreading more rapidly. She outlines the need to develop resilient health systems through working together to prepare for predictable, cross-border impacts of the climate crisis.

Dr Maya Negev is Head of Health Systems Policy at the University of Haifa, in Israel
. She was awarded a Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowship to visit the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK.

Dr Negev was filmed at the Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowship Alumni conference in 2019, presenting her work on ‘The impact of climate change on public health in the Middle East: from risk to opportunity’.
