Tropical Storm Aere Heading for Japan

Tropical Storm Aere which hit the Philippines over the weekend is on course to reach Japan on 12th May and will brush past Taiwan on 11th May. The warning from the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre in Tokyo predicts gusts of up to 60 knots, reducing to 50 knots within 48 hours.

Known locally as Tropical Storm Bebeng, the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council recorded the following incidents which occurred as a result of the bad weather:

“…Ferry services to and from Romblon and from the port of Lucena to Marinduque have resumed as of 3:00 PM, 8 May 2011. Hence, status of strandees decreased from 9,327 persons to 663 persons…

“…A tornado occurred in Calumpit , Bulacan on May 7, 2011 with forty-one (41) houses damaged: 4 Totally and 37 partially.”

Flooding and mudslides occurred in several regions and there was also one report of a capsized boat with two fishermen missing as a result. Telehphones lines are down in Camarines Sur and Albay. Parts of Northern Samar have no electricity. Several roads and bridges have collapsed and three dams have opened their gates.
