Plains Midstream Canada, a subsidiary of Plains All American Pipeline L.P., released a statement on 5th May 2011 which explained the efforts of the company to address an oil spill on the Rainbow pipeline in the Evi area of Northern Alberta, Canada.
The oil spill occurred at 07:50 (MDT) on 29th April 2011 and the company has estimated that 4,500 m3 or 28,000 barrels of light sweet crude oil was released as a result. According to the company, the oil spill is contained in an area measuring 50 metres by 800 metres and is at least 300 metres away from running water.
Plains Midstream Canada has 150 workers on site cleaning the area and has been monitoring air quality for nearby residents and schools. Skimmers are working to restore an affected beaver pond and a wildlife protection plan has been put in place.
The Rainbow pipeline system consists of a 772km, 20-inch to 24-inch mainline crude oil pipeline extending from the Norman Wells Pipeline located in Zama, Alberta to Edmonton, Alberta and 183km of gathering pipelines. The system has a throughput capacity of approximately 220,000 barrels per day and transported approximately 187,000 barrels per day during 2010.
