COVID: a mentor’s perspective | Professor Mandy MacLean FMedSci

acmedsci published this video item, entitled “COVID: a mentor’s perspective | Professor Mandy MacLean FMedSci” – below is their description.

“People might feel it’s a sign of weakness to say, “I was on track for a fantastic career, but now I’m not so sure.”

Professor Mandy MacLean FMedSci has been mentoring for over thirty years. Here, she reviews the stark challenges facing early career researchers post-COVID, with an ever-more competitive and uncertain career path.

“We have to become more proactive about mentoring our early career researchers. A lot of people don’t want to come for help, or worry that admitting their fears and funding problems is a sign of weakness.”

“I would ask early career researchers, if you’re having any of these feelings of doubt, please reach out to somebody. Early career researchers: get in touch with your mentors. And to mentors: get in touch with your mentees. Even if they have not approached you, you can be sure that they’re uncertain and facing some worries and challenges that would be really good to talk through.”
