Corruption in global health: the open secret | Professor Patty García

The 2019 Academy of Medical Sciences & The Lancet International Health Lecture was held on Wednesday 27 November, presented by Professor Patricia J. García.

“Corruption is embedded in health systems. All my life, as a researcher, as a public health worker, and as a Minister of Health, I have been able to see entrenched dishonesty and fraud. But despite being one of the most important barriers to implementing universal health coverage around the world, corruption is rarely openly discussed.

If we are really aiming to achieve the sustainable development goals and ensure healthy lives for all, corruption in global health must no longer be an open secret.”

– Professor García

The region around Machu Picchu, including the Sacred Valley, Inca Trail and colonial city of Cusco, is rich in archaeological sites. On Peru’s arid Pacific coast is Lima, the capital, with a preserved colonial center and important collections of pre-Columbian art.
