Publishing: Zadie Smith Goes to Harper’s Magazine

Zadie Smith will be taking over the New Books column at Harper’s Magazine from Benjamin Moser. As well as being Professor of Creative Writing at New York University, she is the author of three novels—White Teeth, The Autograph Man, and On Beauty.

White Teeth was completed during Smith’s final year at Cambridge University. Several publishing companies had bid for the rights before the manuscript was even complete and the novel went on to win numerous awards.

The daughter of  a Jamaican mother and English father, Smith is married to Northern Irish poet and writer, Nick Laird. The couple met and married at Cambridge University, choosing Smith’s own college chapel to tie the knot. They divide their time between London and New York.

Harper’s Magazine has been publishing essays and literary comment for over 150 years. A subscription service, the publication is owned and managed by the independent Harper’s Magazine Foundation.
