Djibouti has a strategically important coastline along the choke point between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, opposite the coast of Yemen. Over 17,000 cargo ships pass through the Suez canal annually, passing the coastline of Djibouti on their way to the Mediterranean Sea or the Arabian Sea. It is estimated that around 7.5% of the world’s sea trade passes through the area.
