Gulf countries have the world’s highest proportion of migrants in their populations. Many of them have many more migrants than locals. Surprisingly, 78% of Qatar’s population were born in another country. In the United Arab Emirates, this figure goes as high as 87%.
Many of the foreigners are highly-skilled workers from Western countries who occupy the engineering positions in the oil and gas companies. Others are low-skilled Asians who take blue collar jobs and live under terrible conditions.
In summary, the Gulf economies are heavily dependent on foreign labor. And this is a problem, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, when many of those workers have flown back to their homes. As a result, most of the oil-rich monarchies have launched ‘arabization’ policies: they want to enforce private companies to hire local workers. But why is having so many migrants a problem? Can these ‘arabization’ policies work? We will answer all these questions in this video.
